Bible Passage: “Whoever says ‘I know him’ but does not keep his commandments is a liar, and the truth is not in him, but whoever keeps his word, in him truly the love of God is perfected. By this we may know that we are in him: whoever says he abides in him ought to walk in the same way in which he walked.” (1 John 2:4-6 ESV)
Scripture Reading: 1 Thessalonians 5:1-11
When I was in elementary school, many years ago, I dreamed of becoming a professional tennis player.
At that time, the best men’s tennis player was Ivan Lendl, and I idolized him. I had his poster on my bedroom wall, bought tennis shirts like his with the three diamond-shaped blocks on the front, and even mimicked his walk and style of play.
I told everyone who would listen that I wanted to be just like him when I grew up. I was a dedicated fan; I learned from him and worked hard to emulate him.
Fortunately, my youthful idol was eventually replaced by a deeper commitment that transformed my heart, mind, and soul as I chose to follow Jesus Christ.
God is a jealous God, and on Judgment Day, He will judge our dedication to His teachings and the way of life exemplified by Jesus Christ.
This raises an important question:
What does it truly mean for a man to be a disciple of Christ?
Being a disciple involves much more than simply believing in Him; it requires a commitment to follow His example and adopt His values in our daily lives, as today’s passage shows. Discipleship means actively learning from His teachings, embracing His principles of love, compassion, and humility, and engaging in a transformative journey of faith.
We are expected to have unwavering trust in Him alone for salvation, recognizing that it is a divine gift that cannot be earned through any amount of good deeds or personal achievements (Ephesians 2:8-9). This understanding highlights the grace that is freely given to us. In response to this profound gift, we are encouraged to accept His love and salvation wholeheartedly.
Inspired by His perfect love and mercy, we are called to extend that same grace to our brothers and sisters, fostering a community of compassion, support, and understanding among one another.
When we live this way, we truly follow Christ and set ourselves up well for the final judgment.
Prayer: Father, we know we will have to give an account of any idols that may have taken Your rightful place at the centre of our lives. We desire to be fully committed disciples, ready to serve wherever and whenever You need us. Holy Spirit, guide us to our Father, like the prodigal son, and prepare us for Judgment Day. Amen.
Reflection: Is anything stopping you from being a fully committed disciple of our Lord Jesus Christ? Ask the Holy Spirit to show you anything that needs to change.
