The Judgment of Gifts

In Daily Devotional by Jacques Van Dyk

Bible Passage: “For to everyone who has will more be given, and he will have an abundance. But from the one who has not, even what he has will be taken away.” (Matthew 25:29 ESV)

Scripture Reading: Matthew 25:14-30

The Bible proclaims that we receive spiritual gifts and talents from the Holy Spirit. As stated in 1 Corinthians 12:7, “To each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good.” Additionally, Galatians 5:18 explains that if we are led by the Spirit, we are not under the law.

However, this does not grant us the freedom to live in sin.

Instead, the Holy Spirit provides us with the fruit of the Spirit to glorify God (Galatians 5:22-23). We use these fruits and our spiritual gifts, based on our God-given abilities, to serve others. These blessings cannot be earned; they are gifts from the Holy Spirit that enable us to do the good works that God has predestined for us to accomplish.

In today’s passage, we learn a parable about a master who divided his wealth among his servants according to their talents and abilities. God is a just God, and we cannot blame our failures on a lack of skills or aptitude; instead, they stem from a lack of dedication.

The wealth in this story represents the resources, gifts, or talents that have been entrusted to us. If you have been blessed with significant resources and abilities, God expects you to invest them meaningfully in His Kingdom. He doesn’t want us to hide our talents and gifts; instead, He wants us to use them for good.

The question is not how much we have, but how well we use what has been entrusted to us right where we are today.

This parable illustrates the outcomes of two different attitudes toward Judgment Day. Believers who prepare diligently for the final judgment by using their time and talents—gifts that God gives to serve faithfully—will be greatly rewarded. In contrast, believers who do not will still be saved but will receive much smaller rewards in eternity.

Prayer: Father, we know You want all of us to be with You in Heaven one day. However, You also challenge us to invest our time and resources in Your Kingdom. Give us an open heart to accept Your gifts and use them to glorify Your Name. Amen.

Reflection: How are you using your spiritual talents and resources to invest in God’s Kingdom? Are there other ways that you can serve others in need?
