Bible Passage: “And we all, who with unveiled faces contemplate the Lord’s glory, are being transformed into his image with ever-increasing glory, which comes from the Lord, who is the Spirit.” (2 Corinthians 3:18 NIV)
Scripture Reading: 2 Peter 1:1-12; Galatians 5:22-23
Imagine what it would feel like to be crucified.
Imagine looking down from the Cross at people crucifying you.
What would you say and do?
We know what Jesus said and did.
Jesus looked upon corrupt leaders and executioners alike and forgave them (Luke 23:34).
Later, amid His unfathomable agony, He cared for His mother (John 19:25-27).
Does this shock us?
Is the story possibly so familiar that the goodness of Jesus doesn’t awe us anymore?
The sixth mark of a godly man is that we take on the character of Christ, the fruit of the Spirit.
The natural and normal thing for Jesus to do while suffering the agony and shame of the Cross was to forgive and care for others.
It’s not just what He did; it’s who He is.
Our Heavenly Father wants His sons to become men who are like Jesus.
To become godly men, we must learn to walk daily with God and love Him as Jesus did.
To become godly men, we must learn to navigate the real world around us wisely, do good work, join in God’s mission as we are going, and love all people we meet.
As we learn these things, and as we learn to dwell daily upon the greatness of Jesus, our character will be transformed.
A godly man doesn’t just do the right thing; the right thing is the natural thing for him to do.
As we close this week, remember that God isn’t only interested in new Christians. God wants His sons to grow. Churches are meant to be families and schools alike, where we learn these things and move from milk to solid food (1 Corinthians 3:1-3). We must get beyond only learning about our faith to living life with and like Jesus.
We’ll finish the week where we began:
“Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith. For the joy set before Him He endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. Consider Him who endured such opposition from sinners, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart.” (Hebrews 12:1-3).
Prayer: Holy Spirit, thank you for helping me grow. Change my heart and root me so deeply in Christ that Your fruit becomes abundant in my life. Let there be a revival of godly men. Inspire us and help us pursue a godly life with You. Thank You for Your promise that You’ll finish the work You’ve begun in us. Amen.
Reflection: As we close this week, what is God drawing your attention to? Which aspect of a godly man is most compelling to you? Which does God seem to be working on in your life? Where can you celebrate God’s good work to change you already?
