The Work You Put In

In Daily Devotional by J.R. Hudberg

Bible Passage: “Lazy hands make for poverty, but diligent hands bring wealth.” (Proverbs 10:4 NIV)

Scripture Reading: Proverbs 10:1-32

The Book of Proverbs wastes no words when it comes to a man’s work.

Proverbs 10:4 doesn’t argue, explain, or soften the message. It states a reality: outcomes are shaped by habits. Over time, diligence builds. Laziness drains. No amount of good intentions can replace consistent effort.

This isn’t simply about money. Poverty and riches describe a broader truth. A slack hand produces shortage—in character, relationships, leadership, and spiritual strength. Diligence produces stability, trust, and growth.

The first erodes slowly. The other compounds quietly.

Laziness isn’t always obvious. It doesn’t always look like inactivity. Sometimes it looks like avoidance—putting off hard conversations, skipping preparation, coasting on past wins, or choosing comfort over responsibility.

It can even look like activity—just pointed in the wrong direction. It’s the subtle decision to do the minimum instead of putting in our best effort. Over time, those choices will cost more than we expect.

Diligence, on the other hand, is faithfulness in the ordinary. It’s showing up when no one applauds. It’s finishing what you start. It’s doing the right thing when shortcuts are available. Diligence doesn’t chase excitement; it commits to consistency. And consistency, Proverbs says, makes a man rich—in results, reputation, and readiness, and yes, sometimes even in money.

Men are surrounded by distractions designed to dull our effort. Entertainment on demand. Comfort without cost. Success stories without the grind behind them. Proverbs cuts through the noise and reminds us: life rewards the man who takes responsibility for his hands—what he does with them, and what he neglects.

A diligent man earns trust because others know he will follow through. It shapes family life because consistency creates security. It shapes faith because disciplined obedience strengthens conviction.

Laziness, by contrast, forces others to carry the weight—or leaves it undone.

Proverbs 10:4 challenges every man to look honestly at his patterns.

Not your potential. Not your intentions. Not your ideas. Not your aspirations.

Your habits.

Where are you coasting? Where have you delayed obedience? Where has comfort replaced commitment?

God honors diligent men—not because they are perfect, but because they are faithful. The action you choose today is building tomorrow. Choose diligence. You’ll live with the reward.

Prayer: God, it’s easy to just go through life and face the tasks that come with each day. Help me to be more deliberate and focused with my actions. I want to build good habits and processes for life that honour You. Amen.

Reflection: What habits do you have that need to be reevaluated? Perhaps this is the week to track your time and actions, and take note of where they are consistently spent.
