They’re Watching More Than Listening

In Daily Devotional by Steven Sukkau

Bible Passage: “Follow my example, as I follow the example of Christ.” (1 Corinthians 11:1 NIV)

Scripture Reading: Titus 2:6-7; 1 Timothy 4:12

People (kids especially) rarely remember all your words, but they almost always remember your example.

You can lecture my kids for an hour about honesty, but then they catch you leaving the gas station with an extra ice cream cone that the cashier forgot to ring up, and when you don’t go back to pay for it, any lesson about honesty disappears instantly.

Actions speak louder than words because actions reveal what a man actually believes.

I think of Atticus Finch in To Kill a Mockingbird. His children don’t just hear him talk about justice and integrity; they watch him live it out in public when it costs him something.

Paul didn’t simply tell the Corinthians what to do. He said, “Follow my example, as I follow the example of Christ” (1 Corinthians 11:1). He understood that the next generation needs a visible model of faithfulness.

Titus was told to “set an example by doing what is good” (Titus 2:6-7). Timothy was instructed to model faith “in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith, and in purity” (1 Timothy 4:12).

The truth is, strengthening the next generation has less to do with having all the right answers and more to do with living a life worth imitating.

Young people are looking for authenticity. They can spot hypocrisy from a mile away. Again, it’s easy to think “I have to be perfect”, but I don’t think that’s it either. Young people are searching for consistency. They want to know if faith can be real when life gets hard.

They want to know, does following Jesus actually change the way a man lives?

How does this look in everyday life? It’s how you speak to your waiter or waitress. How you handle stress in a healthy way, and whether you apologize when you’re wrong.

Someone is learning from all of it.

Whether you’re a father, coach, teacher, older brother, pastor, friend, or employer, your example is shaping people around you every day without you realizing it.

You may never know the full impact of your example of faithfulness.

But perhaps years from now, someone will stand stronger because they once watched you follow Jesus with all you’ve got.

Prayer: Heavenly Father, help me live a life that points others toward You. Forgive me for the moments when my actions have not reflected Your character. Give me integrity in both public and private. Help me model faith, humility, love, and courage to the people around me, especially the next generation. Let my example reflect Christ more clearly each day. Amen.

Reflection: What is one area of your life where your example could speak more clearly than your words this week?
