Vacation Without Guilt Recap

In Daily Devotional by Mauricio Rosa

Theme of the Week: Vacation Without Guilt

Bible Verse: “Whom have I in heaven but you? And there is nothing on earth that I desire besides you.” Psalm 73:25, ESV

Scripture Reading: Romans 8:1-39

This week, we have learned that physical, mental, emotional, rest is more than simply taking a couple of days off. God’s design for Sabbath rest is integral to who God has made us to be.

We rest by putting God first:

To put God first is unnatural to who we are. Our sinful hearts and our autonomous approach to life lead us away from God. Ultimately, Jesus is our rest. In other words, when we trust God’s ways, we experience his promises and his faithfulness.

“Let us, therefore, strive to enter that rest, so that no one may fall by the same sort of disobedience.” Hebrews 4:11 ESV

We rest in our new God-given identity:

As sons of our heavenly Father, we can trust that he will always give us what is best for us. Timothy Keller says, “If we knew what God knows, we would ask exactly for what he gives.”

“If you then, who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will the heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him!” Luke 11:13 ESV

We live out of a place of rest:

Adam’s first day of life was a Sabbath day. We can live out of a place of rest because God is at work for us, even while we are sleeping. Do you believe that?

“It is in vain that you rise up early and go late to rest, eating the bread of anxious toil; for he gives to his beloved sleep” Psalm 127: 2 ESV

We rest out of a place of trust:

The Apostle Paul reminds us in his letter to the Romans that in Christ, there is no condemnation for us. God has also given us his Spirit, his very power to enable us to live in true freedom. And if this is not enough, God made us heirs with Christ! The final encouragement he gives us is that, after being so generous to us, will God hold anything back from us? No – we can trust him.

“He who did not spare his own Son but gave him up for us all, how will he not also with him graciously give us all things?” Romans 8:32 ESV
