Weaker. What?

Theme of the Week: Godly Men Are Protectors

Bible Verse: “Husbands, in the same way, live with your wives in an understanding way, as with a weaker partner, showing them honor as coheirs of the grace of life, so that your prayers will not be hindered.” 1 Peter 3:7 ESV

Scripture Reading: 1 Peter 3:1-7

At first glance, 1 Peter 3:7 seems provocative. Women are the weaker vessel? Could anything be more offensive to women today?

Take a second look, though, and you discover that “weaker” is not meant to put women down.

Generally speaking, women are not as physically strong as men. Nowhere does the Bible imply that women are weaker mentally or emotionally than men.

The shocking part of this verse isn’t that Peter points out a difference between men and women. The shocking part is that Peter calls men to honor their wives, a completely new concept in the Greco-Roman culture of the time.

Peter’s point is clear. Men: don’t use your physical advantage as an excuse to not love your wives well. Honor them. Your spiritual life depends on it.

This week we’re going to be considering our role as protectors. 1 Peter 3:7 is a good place to start. To state the obvious, men are physically different than women. Most of the time, guys are bigger, and we can deadlift more weight. Sadly, some guys have exploited their physical size to domineer over their wives. A much better way is to use our physical strength, if we have it, to make our wives feel safe.

How should we use our difference? Not for our own benefit but to honor our wives.

If you are married, how can you show honor to your wife today?
