What About That Passage?

Theme of the Week: Real Men Love, Cherish and Value All Women

Bible Verse: “This is the law regarding jealousy when a wife goes astray and defiles herself while under her husband’s authority, or when a feeling of jealousy comes over a husband and he becomes jealous of his wife. He is to have the woman stand before the LORD, and the priest will carry out all these instructions for her.” Numbers 5:29-30

Scripture Reading: Numbers 5:11-31

Some passages seem, at first glance, to reflect a patriarchal view of women. As I’ve studied them, though, I’ve found that many of these challenging passages aren’t what they first appear. When you understand the culture in which they’re written, the circumstances around the pas-sage, or the simple idea that men and women are equal and yet are meant to function differently, you begin to see that the Bible contains really good news for women.

Take Numbers 5:11-31. It outlines how the Israelites should treat the case of a husband who suspects his wife of adultery. When I first read it, I thought it sounded like primitive magic. As I studied the passage, I realized that it outlined steps that were designed to protect women and entrust the situation to God rather than taking matters into his own hands.

I don’t want to dismiss every difficult passage. Some indeed are difficult. But we can’t miss the point: from the beginning to the end, Scripture dignifies women. They matter to God. And we’re called to love, cherish, and value them too.

Men: God calls us to see and treat women well. As you interact with women — your mothers, sisters, wives, coworkers, friends, and more — ask God to help you seem them the way that he does. And use your life to serve them for God’s sake and for everybody’s good.
