When the Darkness is Deep Enough

Theme of the Week: What is Salt & Light of the World? The Christian Influence

Bible Verse: “You are the salt of the earth…You are the light of the world.” (Matthew 5:13-14)

Scripture Reading: Psalm 119:105, 2 Corinthians 4:1-6, Job 6:6

We’ve lived through a very difficult time, through a pandemic, social isolation and unrest, racial tension, and political division. And it’s not over! It’s easy to get discouraged and to want to withdraw from the world.

But Jesus calls us to influence the world. The key to influencing the world is to be transformed by Jesus, growing in holiness as we’re changed by him. And then, as we’re transformed, allow that transformation to show as we rub shoulders with everyone around us, loving our neighbors, forgiving our enemies, working with integrity, and showing compassion to people around us.

When Christians live this way, God will use us to preserve a decaying world and to illuminate a world that’s wrapped in darkness.

We’ll still be misunderstood and sometimes we’ll be persecuted (Matthew 5:10-12). But some will see Jesus in our lives and be drawn to him because of what they see in our lives.

Men, let’s ask God to change us so that our lights shine brightly. The world needs Christian men who love Jesus, are being transformed by the Spirit, and are committed to love their neighbors as themselves. We may seem ordinary, but God will use us for his glory when we live as salt and light in this world.
