When the Time Just Isn’t Right

In Daily Devotional by J.R. Hudberg

Bible Passage: “There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under the heavens.” (Ecclesiastes 3:1 NIV)

Scripture Reading: Ecclesiastes 3:1-8

Why not now?

It’s a phrase that’s intended to inspire men to get off the fence, make a choice, and take some action.

It also carries an element of criticism; men don’t like to be thought of as indecisive. We like to think of ourselves as men of action, taking control and making the right decisions as naturally as the sun rising in the morning.

“Why not now?” is a good phrase, ironically, when used at the right time. But the right time is not something men are especially adept at being patient about (again, rather ironic). Men feel pressure to control timelines and outcomes. We want to deliver results, to contribute to the successes that lead to bigger and better things.

Ecclesiastes 3:1 reminds us that there are seasons for everything. There is a right time for all things. And most encouragingly, that God is responsible for those right seasons. It is not something within our responsibility or control. We do not need to sweat the “when,” but rather to be patient with the times and seasons in the hands of our loving God.

But let’s not overlook the truth that hides on the other side of this coin.

The “tail” to this “heads” of “right” season is that “wrong” times and seasons also exist.

Perhaps these outnumber the right seasons.

As we lead in our homes, churches, and workplaces, Ecclesiastes 3 reminds us to watch for the right time to act. And in the waiting, it reminds us of our need to trust God in the uncertainty.

When we plan, strategize, and envision, we must not forget that God governs the seasons of life, every season, in all the extremes.

Being men after God’s heart means modelling waiting patiently on the Lord’s timing and being courageous enough to move when the season for moving arrives.

God has a will, a way, and a time. Wise men wait for all three.

Prayer: God who established the seasons of the world and the seasons of life, help me to trust Your timing, help me to wait patiently for the proper seasons, and forgive me for foolishly charging forward on my own wisdom. Amen.

Reflection: What season are you waiting for right now? How can you wait patiently with trust in God, and how might you develop the courage to move when the season is right?
