Why Spiritual Disciplines Matter

In Daily Devotional by Darryl Dash

Bible Verse: “Man does not live on bread alone but on every word that comes from the mouth of the LORD.” Deuteronomy 8:3

Scripture Reading: Deuteronomy 8:1-20

Why do we need spiritual disciples?

Because we need more than what this world offers.

In Deuteronomy 8, Moses describes a problem we all face. When life starts to go well, we’re quick to forget God. Good food, nice houses, and more possessions can cause us to forget what matters most (Deuteronomy 8:11-14).

Moses reminds us that these things aren’t enough. God created us in such a way that these things will never satisfy the real needs of our souls. He created us with a hunger for him, and we must turn to God and His Word if we’re going to be satisfied.

Spiritual disciplines are a way of reminding us of this fact. We need God. These practices are ways of fighting our tendency to get caught up in thinking that the ordinary stuff of life is enough to fill our souls.

We don’t engage in spiritual disciplines for the sake of the disciplines themselves. They are not primarily to make us more self-disciplined or knowledgeable, as good as those things may be.

Spiritual disciplines remind us that we need more than a comfortable life. We need God. Our souls are meant to be fuelled by Him alone, or else we won’t have what we really need to live.

Prayer: Lord, forgive me for thinking that a pleasant life is enough. I need more. I need You. Help me to practice disciplines that remind me of this important truth. Amen.

Reflection: Why does a comfortable life cause us to forget God?
