Why We Need the Reminders

In Daily Devotional by J.R. Hudberg

Bible Passage: “The Lord highly exalted Solomon in the sight of all Israel and bestowed on him royal splendor such as no king over Israel ever had before.” (1 Chronicles 29:25)

Scripture Reading: 1 Chronicles 29:21-30

This week, we have been spending time in First Chronicles, looking at the retelling of Israel’s story from the perspective of the return from exile. The Chronicler was seeking to stir up hope and confidence that God was still at work in Israel.

It is fitting to end with a statement like that found in today’s verse.

Though the Chronicler is still looking into Israel’s past and retelling familiar stories, he finds new ways to encourage the people through stories they already knew.

Look at verse 25. Men, how much do you long for that kind of thing? Even its equivalent in your own life?

Solomon’s story is a study in itself, but there is one key feature of it that we cannot forget, and verse 25 leads with the most important idea:

God is our source.

That’s an easy thing to give lip service to but shockingly easy to live without recognizing. When the concerns of our day-to-day lives take all of our time and attention, not only is it easy to overlook what we have to be thankful for, but also to forget the true source of those blessings as well.

Men, God is writing your story and still telling His, making you a part of it in ways that may require you to step back and see something bigger than what you normally do and appreciate that God has placed you where you are.

Your task is the same as Solomon’s: to be faithful with what God has given you.

As we leave this week in First Chronicles, remember one thing:

The way we understand the story may not be the best way to understand it. Ask God to help you see with fresh eyes, the way the Chronicler did.

Prayer: God, thank You for the blessings You have given me. Help me to see You in them and to serve You with them. Amen.

Reflection: What do you need to thank God for today?
