You Only Need a Few Brothers

Theme of the Week: Godly Men Are Team Players

Bible Verse: Therefore, confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective. James 5:16 NIV

Scripture Reading: James 5:16, Proverbs 19:20

My friend and I lift weights together three times a week.

I’ve got another friend and we are holding each other to a healthy eating plan. Another friend and I memorize four verses together every week. Similarly, I have another friend and we help keep ourselves from looking at things online that we shouldn’t be looking at.

I am amazed at what can be accomplished when two people agree to hold each other accountable. Whether it is for physical goals or for spiritual goals, accountability is a powerful tool.

Accountability is easy when things are going well. Take for example, when you are eating right or exercising consistently or being pure in your thoughts and actions. But welcoming accountability is extremely difficult when you mess up.

I’m not sure about you, but I don’t want anyone to know when I mess up. I want to hide it and appear as though I’m successful all the time. However, the truth is that accountability really shows how robust it is if we welcome it when we fail. Something very powerful happens when we confess our sins and our failings to each other.

Maybe you’ve experienced this cycle; you sin – you feel bad – you confess it to God and experience his forgiveness – only to then sin in the exact same way again. I know I have.

John says that if we confess to God we are forgiven (1 John 1:9) and James says, when we confess to each other we are healed. (James 5:16) We need both these confessions.

Confessing to each other flicks on the lights and exposes our secret sins. When that happens, temptation loses much of its power. I have decided that I’d rather have a few people who know everything about me – both good and bad, than to have everyone find out a few terrible things about me.

I’d rather experience spiritual healing through honest confession than spiritual death through secrecy and dishonesty.

I’d rather experience spiritual healing through honest confession than spiritual death through secrecy and dishonesty.

I know it isn’t easy to find that person with whom you can share everything but may I encourage you to not have any place in your life that is secret? Find that friend and experience freedom.
