Stuff.
You got stuff?
According to the LA Times, “The average U.S. household has 300,000 things, from paper clips to ironing boards.”
I don’t think it is wrong to have stuff (though, like anything else, we can move into the realm of “extreme” quite easily).
I think the real problem comes when we shift our role from caretaker to owner. The moment we do that, we forget that every single thing we have belongs to God.
Consider David.
At one point in his life, he was overwhelmed by the kindness and generosity of God (2 Samuel 7:18-19; Psalm 16:6).
But somewhere along the journey, he lost that sense of gratitude.
When he saw Bathsheba, the wife of one of his soldiers, he wanted her. It didn’t matter that he already had six wives (as well as numerous concubines); he wanted another woman.
His greed, his sense that what he had was his, had blinded him to God’s kindness.
(Now, don’t hear that I am saying that multiple wives and concubines were God’s kindness to David; apparently, David’s envy and dissatisfaction started long before Bathsheba!)
The prophet Nathan confronted David about David’s sins of adultery, murder, and lying. He told David what God thought about David’s actions:
“I gave you all Israel and Judah. And if all this had been too little, I would have given you even more. Why did you despise the word of the Lord by doing what is evil in his eyes?” (2 Samuel 12:8-9)
Men, I know we work hard, and we make money; that is a good and noble thing. With that money, we buy the things we need and the things we want.
But don’t ever forget that you are not the owner of those things; you are the steward of those things. For sons of God, everything they have belongs to God.
When we forget to fear the Lord in this area, we, like David, do what is evil in the eyes of God.
We hoard. We waste. We withhold. We envy. We compare. We boast.
All that we have belongs to the Lord.
Fear the Lord and steward His possessions honorably.
Prayer: Dear Lord, You have been more generous to me than I deserve. And yet, I can so easily get confused about who owns it. Have mercy on me, Lord. Show me what You want me to do with the things I have acquired. Help me to be an honorable and humble steward of Yours. I want to honor You with everything. You deserve it all. Amen.
