You’re Not the Only One

In Daily Devotional by Brad Klassen

Bible Passage: “But he said to them, ‘Unless I see the nail marks in his hands and put my finger where the nails were, and put my hand into his side, I will not believe.’” (John 20:25 NIV)

Scripture Reading: John 20:24-29; Luke 24:1-12

Have you ever had a question that you were sure you were the only one asking?

As men, we generally don’t want to be the first to bring something up. We feel intimidated.

What if I am wrong?

What if it’s a stupid question?

What if I’m the only one?

It’s these doubts that keep us quiet and isolated.

In today’s verses, we read the passage in which Thomas reacts upon hearing that Jesus had risen from the dead.

It’s the passage that makes us think of him as a doubter. While the other disciples are excited, he makes it clear that unless he saw the nail marks in Jesus’ hands, put his finger where the nails were, and put his hand into Jesus’ side, he would not believe (John 20:25).

And because of that statement, we have often labeled him as “Doubting Thomas”.

But is that accurate?

Why does Thomas get pinned while the other disciples seem to get a pass?

What’s interesting to note is that Thomas wasn’t the only disciple who initially doubted the news of Jesus’ resurrection.

In fact, they all did.

In Luke 24:11, we read that all the disciples did not believe the women when they said that Jesus had risen from the dead “because their words seemed to them like nonsense” (Luke 24:11).

Men—like Thomas, you are not the only doubter in the group.

And what’s interesting is that Jesus even let Thomas sit in his doubts for a whole week (John 20:26)!

Men—like Thomas, Jesus sees your doubts.

Then it gets even better as Jesus proves Himself and then blesses future believers:

“Then Jesus told him, ‘Because you have seen me, you have believed; blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed’” (John 20:29).

Men, if we still believe, even in our doubts, Jesus says we are blessed.

Then, like the other disciples, Thomas went on to tell others about Jesus and was a powerful voice in the early church.

Jesus has room for our doubts. Just don’t let your doubts outweigh your faith.

Prayer: Jesus, thank You that You don’t condemn me in my doubts. Help me find the courage to share my doubts and to hear others’ doubts. Amen.

Reflection: What is one doubt you could share with a friend? Have the courage to make that conversation happen.
