Playing My Part

In Daily Devotional by Darryl Dash

Theme of the Week: The God Who Still Speaks

Bible Verse: “Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.” Matthew 28:19-20

Scripture Reading: Matthew 28:18-20

Imagine being an actor and learning your role in a play. You’d study the script, learning the plot and the characters, and learning what your character should do and say during the play.

According to theologian Kevin Vanhoozer, that’s a pretty good picture of the Christian life. The drama is what God is doing in the world. The script is the Bible, which shows us the first acts and the final act of the play. We’re in the middle, playing our small role, learning how we should live.

Don’t just read the Bible to learn more. Read it to learn your part in God’s story.

That’s part of what Jesus meant when he told his followers to “make disciples…teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you.” We’re to play our roles as his followers by learning what Jesus has taught, and then following him in the present as we play our roles in his big story.

God has revealed himself to us in many ways: through creation, other people, Scripture, and his Son. The reason he’s revealed himself to us is so that we could enter into relationship with him through Jesus and learn to play our role in what he’s doing in the world.
