Loving Too Much

In Daily Devotional by Jordan Harnum

Theme of the Week: Stewardship

Bible Verse: Don’t love money; be satisfied with what you have. For God has said, “I will never fail you. I will never abandon you.” Hebrews 13:5 NLT

Scripture Reading: Hebrews 13:1-25

Who would have thought that you could love something too much?

I mean, isn’t love a good thing? As men, we are often encouraged to love God, our wives, our children, our church, and our community, but throughout Scripture, we are encouraged not to love money specifically.

So, what do we do – hate it? Refuse it? Shame those who have it?

None of these. We are called to be satisfied with and steward what we’ve been given.

Stewarding means responsibly managing something that doesn’t belong to you. That means it is possible not to love money, but at the same time take great care of it for the glory of God.

How can we steward God’s resources without falling in love with it, and allowing it to become the object of our desires and pursuits?

Several practices can be helpful: showing restraint, beginning with the end in mind, being faithful with whatever amount we have, and remembering it’s all God’s to begin with. We will be touching on these topics throughout the week ahead.

Learning to be satisfied with our allotment and steward God’s resources well is no easy task, but doing so will help you live a generous and contented life. With God’s help, we can swim against consumerism, hustle culture, and selfishness to live truly compelling lives to the world around us.

Prayer: God, thank you for your provision in my life. Help me learn not to love money, but to love you and to steward your resources well. Help me shine your light to the people around me as someone who is not mastered by the love of money.

Reflection: How are you navigating the balance of stewarding and loving?
