Eating Too Fast

In Daily Devotional by Jordan Harnum

Theme of the Week: Stewardship

Bible Verse: In the house of the wise are stores of choice food and oil, but a foolish man devours all he has.” Proverbs 21:20

Scripture Reading: Proverbs 21:1-31

There are some groceries in my house we probably shouldn’t buy.

Chocolate milk, Doritos, and chocolate-covered almonds.

Why? Well, some may call it a lack of self-control, but I like to call it an over-appreciation for God’s blessings. In college, I would drink 2 litres of chocolate milk on the way home from the grocery store—no stores of choice things in my dorm.

Though there is nothing inherently wrong with delicious foods, if I am being honest, overindulgence and lack of discipline (in anything) doesn’t seem to lead me any closer to Jesus.

In Proverbs 21:20 it says that “In the house of the wise are stores of choice food and oil, but a foolish man devours all he has.”

The writer of this Proverb makes it clear that wise men do not devour all their resources in one big gulp; the same is true of our finances. Foolish men spend everything they have, while wise men consider saving what they can.

But, let’s be honest, spending money quickly may not always be in our control. With the cost of living increasing, rising interest rates and things like groceries, energy and gas getting pricier, sometimes storing our “food and oil” can feel like a few pennies in a piggy bank.

Nevertheless, this reminder from Proverbs causes us to consider how our spending habits glorify God, and if there is anything we are quick to devour.

Perhaps it’s that early morning coffee on the road instead of at home, or that slight obsession with the latest gaming system. In what ways may God be calling you to slow down your fiscal appetite?

Prayer: Lord, thank you for your provision in my life and the many wonderful things that I get to enjoy because of it. Help me to be wise in my spending, and not mindlessly devour your resources. Help me be slow to splurge, quick to save, and eager to give. Amen.

Reflection: Consider the ways God might be challenging you to reconsider how you are using His finances.
