Hope to Persevere

In Daily Devotional by Kirk Giles

Bible Passage: “For my eyes have seen your salvation.” (Luke 2:30 CSB)

Scripture Reading: Luke 2:25-30; Isaiah 40:1-2

Leadership expert John Maxwell once said this:

“The only guarantee for failure is to stop trying.”

Life will not always be easy. There will be obstacles, disappointments, and even failure. Every man needs to cultivate the skill of perseverance, or it will be very easy for the difficult moments and seasons of life to take you out.

The best motivation to persevere is when you have hope.

Too many men have too low a vision for hope. We have hope for the next step in our career, for the pay raise we are going to get to help pay the bills, or for our health to improve. The reality is that nearly everything we put our hope in has the potential to fail.

But what if there were somewhere to find hope that would help you persevere through anything?

In Luke 2:25-30, we are introduced to a man named Simeon. For his whole life, he had put his hope in something that had been promised hundreds of years before he was born, but the promise had not been fulfilled yet.

One day, Simeon was guided by the Holy Spirit to visit the Temple in Jerusalem. On that day, new parents and their baby arrived for the child to be dedicated to the LORD.

Simeon held this baby in his arms and said, “My eyes have seen your salvation” (Luke 2:30).

Simeon always had hope that the consolation of Israel would come in his lifetime. This refers to the promise of the Messiah as found in the Old Testament. This Messiah would come to remove Israel’s sorrow and bring them comfort.

And now, after all this time, Simeon is holding this Messiah in his arms.

Imagine that moment.

For Simeon, the hope he had that God would always keep His promises allowed him to persevere while he waited.

The only hope a man can find that will carry him through any season of life is to hope in Someone eternal, like Simeon did.

If you’re struggling to persevere today, put your hope in a God who kept His promise to send His Son to be your salvation.

Prayer: Lord, keep my heart and mind fixed on Your promises and strengthen my hope so I can persevere through any season of life. Amen.

Reflection: How does hope help us persevere?
