Bible Passage: “Be shepherds…not lording it over those entrusted to you, but being examples to the flock.” (1 Peter 5:2-3 NIV)
Scripture Reading: Proverbs 4:1-2
One of the helpful things about getting older is that, if we’re paying attention, life teaches a man things.
Sometimes those lessons come through victories, but often they come from mistakes.
Failure, long nights, feverish prayers, and generally just learning things the hard way.
Over time, God uses those experiences to shape wisdom inside us.
The problem is that many men don’t realize how much wisdom they’ve accumulated.
But Scripture paints a different picture.
Proverbs says, “Listen, my sons, to a father’s instruction…I give you sound learning” (Proverbs 4:1-2). Wisdom is meant to be poured into the lives of others.
Peter echoes the same idea when he tells leaders to be shepherds, “not lording it over” people, but leading through care and example (1 Peter 5:2-3).
That’s part of what makes Creed such a great movie.
The eponymous Rocky is older now and slower, worn down in many ways. But all the lessons, discipline, failures, and perseverance from his own boxing journey suddenly become valuable to someone else.
The young Adonis benefits from the battles Rocky already fought years earlier.
That’s what mentorship often looks like; it’s our scars becoming someone else’s training guide.
The temptation, as we get older, is sometimes to disengage from younger generations: “They won’t listen anyway,” we tell ourselves, or “They’ll figure it out eventually, it’s not my responsibility.”
But imagine if the people who helped shape you had taken that attitude.
Someone shared wisdom with you, corrected you, and believed in you when you lacked maturity or direction.
Now it’s your turn to do the same.
There are younger people around you carrying burdens silently, making avoidable mistakes, and searching for wisdom in all the wrong places.
Your experiences may be exactly what God wants to use to help them.
So don’t waste what God taught you through your own struggles. Instead, share it. Wisdom earned through pain and hard-won battles and defeats is a treasure meant to be invested.
Prayer: Heavenly Father, thank You for the lessons You’ve taught me throughout my life, even through painful seasons and mistakes. Help me not to keep that wisdom to myself. Give me humility to lead through service and compassion, not pride or control. Show me who You want me to encourage, mentor, and walk alongside. Use my experiences to help strengthen the next generation for Your glory. Amen.
Reflection: What lesson has God taught you through your past struggles that could help encourage or guide someone younger today?
