Bible Passage: “…if the prophet had told you to do something great, would you not have done it?” (2 Kings 5:13 NIV)
Scripture Reading: 2 Kings 5:1-15
Have you ever searched everywhere for something only to find that it was right in front of you the whole time?
Of course you have.
Why?
Because you’re a man.
We can spot a brown deer in a brown field from 200 yards away, but can’t see the red ketchup right in front of our faces in the white fridge.
Truly a great mystery.
The same thing can happen when we are stuck in our doubts and can’t see a way out; we tend to miss the simple answer.
In 2 Kings 5, we read about Naaman, who had lots of “manly” things going for him. He was a commander in the army of Aram, a valiant soldier, and the king highly valued him.
He also had two things against him: leprosy and success.
The first one makes obvious sense, as leprosy was a difficult condition for anyone.
But it’s the second one that actually created his doubt.
When Naaman heard about a prophet in Israel who could cure him, he went all out to make the trip, hoping to see the prophet say some magic words, wave his hand over him, and cure his leprosy.
Instead, he found a servant who delivered a simple message:
Go take seven baths in the Jordan River.
Naaman literally felt that he didn’t get his money’s worth, and left in a “rage” (2 Kings 5:12).
Then Namaan’s servant spoke up and helped his master see the simple answer right in front of his face.
Imagine Naaman’s thoughts as he entered the water.
Dunk #1: “This is ridiculous.”
Dunk #2: “I command thousands.”
Dunk #3: “I’m highly respected.”
Dunk #4: “Damascus has way cleaner water.”
Dunk #5: “I’ll get laughed at.”
Dunk #6: “Will this even work?”
Dunk #7: “I told you…WHAAAAAAAAAT?????!!!!!”
None of Naaman’s success could cure his leprosy or his doubts, but rather it was his simple act of obedience to God’s word that changed everything.
We need to stop always looking for the grand answer in our doubts and walk in obedience to God’s call in our lives, no matter how many “baths” we have to take.
Prayer: Jesus, thank You that You have an answer for my doubt. Help me to see it in the simplicity and not miss it. Amen.
Reflection: What is one doubt that seems to be too big for you to overcome? Ask Jesus to show you the simple answer He wants you to see.
