180-Degrees to Freedom

In Daily Devotional by Brad Klassen

Bible Passage: “I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.” (John 16:33 NIV)

Scripture Reading: Revelation 21:1-27

Have you ever been watching a car chase scene in a movie where the driver being chased suddenly pulls the e-brake, cranks the wheel, completes a crazy 180-degree turn, and speeds off the other way, leaving the pursuer in his review mirror?

I’ve always wanted to try to do that, but never had the guts.

One of the greatest words in the English Bible is the word “but,” because it changes whatever was said before it.

It turns the sentence 180-degrees like an e-brake U-turn, taking you in the other direction

This week of devotionals might have been a heavy one for many of us. After all, we were talking about some truly deep hurts.

But take heart! Jesus has overcome the world!

Nearing the end of his life, the apostle John was left to die on the prison island of Patmos. It was probably the most physically gruelling time of his life.

Yet, he held on to Jesus.

Why?

Because of the promise Jesus gave him in Revelation 21:4:

That one day He would wipe away every tear, and cancel death, grief, crying, and pain.

Here’s the truth that will set you free:

As long as we breathe the air of this world, we will have trouble and more hurts.

But take heart! Jesus has overcome the world!

And it’s in the promise of that future day where we will truly find complete healing.

Men, pursuing inner healing is hard.

Have the guts to take the steps you need to take.

Maybe it’s reaching out for help. Maybe it starts with vulnerability and tears of sadness. Maybe it’s confessing a secret sin. Or maybe it’s doing the impossible and forgiving the one person you thought you would never forgive.

Whatever it is, do the hard work.

It is worth it.

Prayer: Jesus, thank You that You see my pain and struggle. Help me to hold onto You and Your promise that one day You will wipe that all away. Amen.

Reflection: What area of inner healing did Jesus reveal to you the most this week? Take the steps you need to and find all He has for you!
