Love Leads the Way

In Daily Devotional by J.R. Hudberg

Bible Passage: “Take me away with you—let us hurry! Let the king bring me into his chambers.” (Song of Songs 1:4 NIV)

Scripture Reading: Song of Songs 1:1-17

In the category of things that perhaps are obvious or that never need to be said or written down, Song of Songs (aka Song of Solomon) is a difficult book of the Bible to try to generalize in a seven-day devotional.

It’s a love poem that goes back and forth between a man and a woman (with some of their friends chiming in), full of imagery of passion, desire, and yes, sex.

With this book’s sometimes uncomfortable frankness about the realities of life and romantic love, it is sometimes a stretch to see the spiritual value of the poetry.

But we mustn’t forget that Scripture often dives into the nitty and the gritty, almost meddling in our lives to point us back toward the deliberate design and pure intention of our Creator.

Over the next seven days, we will engage with Song of Songs as a poem about the physical and tangible realities of romance, exploring just a few of the life-giving, relationship-fostering, and character-challenging ideas offered to men who are seeking meaningful, passionate, secure, and ever-deepening relationships (romantic or otherwise).

Regardless of relational status, all men, every last one of us, independent and insulated though you may think you are, we are not “island” exceptions.

For our company to be desired—to be valued and sought after, embraced by those around us, missed when we are absent—is an innate and natural desire implanted by our Creator (see Genesis 2:18).

And yet in the melodic beauty of this poem, we are not invited to sit and be passive, to await the recognition of our valued presence.

In the opening exclamation of the woman in this poem, we read of her desire to be pursued, and we understand the invitation for the man to be the pursuer.

We are exposed to a man’s need to initiate—emotionally, spiritually, relationally. She, present or future, long-time or brand-new, asks us to see her worth and pursue her. To step forward and be the one to take the lead.

In love or in leadership, men are invited to be active, not passive. This week, we will explore what that looks like through the Song of Songs.

Prayer: Father in Heaven, You created us for community and partnership. Whether I have found my mate long ago, or recently, or am still looking, or perhaps may remain single, help me to be the kind of man who takes the lead in life. Amen.

Reflection: Are you actively pursuing your present (or future) spouse? Or are you passively waiting to be pursued?
