A Quiet Place

In Daily Devotional by Brad Klassen

Bible Passage: “The apostles gathered around Jesus and reported to him all they had done and taught. Then, because so many people were coming and going that they did not even have a chance to eat, he said to them, ‘Come with me by yourselves to a quiet place and get some rest.’” (Mark 6:30-31 NIV)

Scripture Reading: Mark 6:30-44; Luke 19:10

Years ago, I was speaking at a camp that was situated on a beautiful lake. Early one morning, I got up, grabbed a canoe, and paddled out.

The lake was still. A few clouds in the blue sky. It was perfect and rejuvenated me spiritually.

It was like God woke me up and said, “Come with me by yourself to a quiet place,” (Mark 6:31 NIV).

Men live in a busy world. Work. Family. “Honey Do” lists. Kids’ schedules. Church responsibilities. And more.

In all the noise, we often turn to other things to “quiet” ourselves. Phones. Social media. Movies.

And it’s easy to forget one major truth: that Jesus actually wants to spend time with us.

In Mark 6, the disciples have been out doing all kinds of ministry, and the lost and hurting people around them wanted even more.

Jesus looked at His friends and knew what they needed: time with Him in a quiet, restful place.

I love this suggestion.

Here is Jesus, who has a heart to “seek and save the lost” (Luke 19:10 NIV)—and what better time to do that than in that moment when the lost were all around them?!

But no. In this moment, Jesus’ heart is for His disciples and caring for their hearts.

When it comes to our spiritual health, it is not just about what we are doing for Jesus, but also what we are doing with Jesus.

As Mark 6 continues, we read that they were never able to enjoy that restful place, as the crowds followed them. But I wonder if they had other opportunities we don’t read about.

So, what about us? Are we willing to stop everything, put the phone down, and find a quiet place to spend some time with Jesus?

I often think back to that lake and wish I could experience it again. But that doesn’t mean I can’t find another quiet and restful place to be with Jesus.

I just need to ask Him where that is and follow Him to the solitary place where He can give me the quiet and rest I need to grow in my spiritual health.

Prayer: Jesus, thank You for actually wanting to spend time with me! Help me to take time in the quiet with You. Amen.

Reflection: What is a good time and place to spend time in quiet rest with Jesus?
