After God’s Heart

In Daily Devotional by J.R. Hudberg

Theme of the Week: Godly Masculinity

Bible Verse: “After removing Saul, he made David their king. God testified concerning him: ‘I have found David son of Jesse, a man after my own heart; he will do everything I want him to do.’” Acts 13:22

Scripture Reading: Acts 13:13-52

David. A man of laudable traits and horrendous shortcomings. His stories and words fill a sizable amount of Scripture. From boyhood to death, few characters in Scripture have the amount of time and energy devoted to them as David.

He is described in the way we all long to be, “a man after God’s own heart.” That is an awe-inspiring description. But we rarely finish the verse. And that’s the important part! God’s description of David is that David would do everything God wanted him to do.

That’s the crux of the matter. If we want to be godly men, we must do what God asks. God may not ask us to do anything in the same way that he asked David. But through Scripture and the leading of the Spirit, He calls us each to follow Him. In the Bible we find what He wants for us. Being a man after God’s heart requires being familiar with His story and finding our place in it.

Prayer: Lord, I want to be a man who knows and follows you. Help me to know your story and to understand what it means to be a part of your kingdom.

Reflection: What is your Scripture reading habit? Commit to a daily practice of reading Scripture to know God’s story and find what it means to be a man after God’s heart.
