Better Than One

In Daily Devotional by Tim Bergmann

Bible Passage: “Two are better than one.” (Ecclesiastes 4:9a NIV)

Scripture Reading: Psalm 139; Mark 3:7-19

You have a spectacularly interesting and amazing life!

Every man does!

Your existence is God’s idea, and He has amazing things in store for you!

Read Psalm 139 and see if you can disagree with that last sentence.

  • Each man has incredible joys they want celebrated.
  • Each man has difficult situations they want prayer for.
  • Each man has interesting thoughts and dreams, and they want to be heard and understood.
  • Each man has failures and weaknesses, and they want to grow.

Now, some might suggest that a man could have these needs met in solitude. They idolize the western drifters (like the ones Clint Eastwood made famous) or the modern drifters (like the ones Jason Statham or Denzel Washington have portrayed so convincingly).

But they would be wrong.

A man must be in community in order for these very significant needs to be met.

Think about Jesus.

He was fully man and fully God. If anyone could’ve thought, “I think I’ve got this on my own”, it was Jesus. But that’s not what He thought.

As Jesus began His public ministry, one of the first things He did was to enter a community.

He chose some disciples, “that they might be with Him” (Mark 3:14 NIV).

Community was critically important to Jesus!

And it wasn’t made up of whoever He happened to bump into that day; it was a conscious and intentional decision.

Nor was it a massive group; it was just twelve.

Jesus wanted to be with these twelve individuals for an extended and purposeful time.

Were they all equally best friends? Did everything go swimmingly for them?

I think Jesus loved them all the same, but the Gospels make it pretty clear that a few had a different degree of closeness with Jesus.

And one of them even betrayed Him!

Still, for Jesus, community was the way to go.

And community is the way for all men to go; God knows that you are better in community than you are alone.

Two are better than one!

Prayer: Dear Lord, thank You for providing other men to help me, and for giving me other men whom I can help. Please give me the grace to make those relationships a priority. Help me not get too busy or distracted with life that I don’t or won’t invest in those relationships. Help me become more like You! Amen.

Reflection: Are you more of a lone drifter than a man in a platoon? What is the biggest roadblock you face when it comes to deep friendship? What might Jesus want to say to you about that?
