Bicycle Built for Two

In Daily Devotional by Bill Farrel

Theme of the Week: Devoted

Bible Verse:  “For we walk by faith, not by sight.” 2 Corinthians 5:7, CSB

Scripture Reading: Genesis 12:1-9

When we were still newlyweds, I (Pam) worked as a special education aide. Bill and I helped Anton, a blind student, experience as many physical activities as possible. He dreamed of things like baseball, bike riding, even going on a swing or slide.

One day, we rented a bicycle built for two. I got on the front while Bill helped Anton climb on. Bill steadied the bike, then I pedaled away to the sound of Anton’s giggles and happy squeals, who was peddling in complete darkness. Anton was showing great faith — exactly the kind of faith that we wives are sometimes called by God to live out.

When God called Bill to attend Talbot Seminary to become a pastor, it meant moving this farm girl to the heart of Los Angeles. I wasn’t even sure God existed in LA! But just as Anton trusted me as I peddled and steered into one of the best adventures of his young life, I was being called to climb on back of the bicycle built for two as Bill wheeled us to California’s urban jungle to prepare for a lifetime of service to God.

I’ll admit that I felt a little like Sarai, Abram’s wife. God had called out to Abram and said, “Go from your country, your people and your father’s household to the land I will show you” (Genesis 12:1).

Can you imagine the conversation that must have followed?
“Sarai, God told me we are moving.”
“Moving! Where?”
“Don’t know. He will tell us.”
“Well, when do we leave?”
“Now.”

To Sarai’s credit, she went! How many of us would’ve shown that kind of trust and obedience? How many of us squelch the hopes and dreams of our mate? When your man shares his clear call from God, how do you react? With skepticism? Anger? Naysaying? And when your wife is offered an opportunity to spread her wings and soar, do you clip them?

Trust God to take you both on an adventure as you each succeed in whatever calling he has for you. He knows you are a team, and if you walk together through the doors God is opening for you, you can trust that you’ll find blessings there!

Sarai knew that her husband desired to walk with God and obey him. She trusted God and followed her man, and in the new land, she was blessed with her long-awaited miracle son, Isaac. When you trust God, pedaling by faith into what might seem to be the dark unknown, you might just have the ride of your life!

Hop on!

Prayer: Lord, let us not be fearful of the adventure. Father, you are in the driver’s seat, and we trust you even when we can’t see the path ahead. Amen.
