Theme of the Week: Bless Your Wife
Bible Verse: “He is the faithful God, keeping his covenant of love to a thousand generations of those who love him and keep his commandments.” Deuteronomy 7:9
Scripture Reading: Deuteronomy 6:4-9
We pass on many things to our children, don’t we? Some of it is genetics – facial features and receding hairlines – and some of it is our own habits and preferences like the love of the outdoors or our favorite teams.
But did you know that we also pass on the capacity for a lasting marriage? Recent research shows that when a man raised in a home with an intact marriage marries a woman raised in a home with an intact marriage, their divorce rate is 9%. Yes, 9%. Compare that to the national averages.
There are a lot of issues embedded in this research finding but here are a few of the great things you will give your children by blessing your wife by building a marriage that lasts:
- The confidence and strength of will to make a marriage commitment (the research also found that children of divorce marry less often and live together without marriage more often)
- a fundamental belief and optimism that marriage can last
- a real-life model of how to make a lasting marriage
- a healthy expectation of the way men and women treat each other, with love and respect, that will influence who they date, how they will treat others and how they will allow themselves to be treated
We often pray that they would meet and marry the right person, and there is nothing wrong with that. But the greatest impact we can have on our children dating well, choosing a life partner wisely and building a marriage that goes the distance flows directly from blessing our wives.
