Bible Passage: “You are not your own, you were bought at a price.” (1 Corinthians 6:19-20 NIV)
Scripture Reading: Romans 5:1-21
At some point in my life, I inherited some tools from my grandfather. These tools were old, man. I don’t know if I ever actually used them. I wasn’t particularly close to my grandfather, and I’m not even sure why the tools came to me.
Suffice it to say, my care for those tools was quite low.
On the other hand, I have had to purchase tools to complete a particular job. Sometimes, those tools are quite expensive. Now, those tools I care for. I make sure that they aren’t in a place where they can get damaged. They matter to me. They have value to me.
We have been bought at a price as well. We weren’t passed on to God by some other deity. We weren’t inherited. We weren’t simply thrown into the deal with some good stuff.
Each one of us was purchased. And the price that was paid was the blood of our Lord Jesus Christ.
And He has actually paid double for us. This is what redemption means. It means that we were bought back.
We were God’s in the first place. He owned us because He created us. He earned the right to be the proprietor of our lives.
But then we sold ourselves into slavery. We turned away from Him.
Isaiah wrote, “We have turned, every one, to his own way” (Isaiah 53:6 NKJV).
We were in another garage. We were being used for another purpose, a darker, deadlier purpose. And we couldn’t just come back on our own.
In order for the Lord to reclaim His right to our lives, in order for us to be in His garage again, He had to buy us back. He had to purchase what had already been His.
But He did this willingly. He sacrificed Himself so that we could be under His care again.
Think of the most expensive thing you own. Now times that price by a zillion zillion. That still wouldn’t come close to the price that was paid for you!
We are our Lord’s. Our identity is in Him. Nothing can ever change that now!
Prayer: Dear Lord, it is astounding that while I was still a sinner, while I was Your enemy, You paid the highest price to buy me back! How can I ever express how thankful I am for that kind of love? I want to surrender all that I am over to You. You deserve nothing less! Amen.
Reflection: What does it mean that you have been bought at a price, the precious blood of Jesus? What does that say about how valuable you are to Him? What does that require of you as a man?
