Boundaries

In Daily Devotional by J.R. Hudberg

Bible Verse: “This will be your land, with its boundaries on every side.” Numbers 34:12b

Scripture Reading: Numbers 34; Hebrews 3:7-11

Numbers—the book has a lot of those, but really, it’s the story of God’s enduring faithfulness. In the face of doubt, fear, and faithlessness, God’s faithfulness never lets us go. It is who He is. His faithfulness depends on Him, not on us. How great is that?!

The book of Numbers makes a complete circle, right back around to where it started: on the edge of the Promised Land, ready to go into the land. It ends with the dimensions of the inherited land for each tribe. This is yet another testament to God’s faithfulness. What He had promised to Abraham long ago (Genesis 12:7) and repeated to those He brought out of Egypt (Exodus 3:7-8), He was going to fulfill.

Numbers takes us on the journey with Israel as they experience God’s presence. Like all books in Scripture, the book invites us to see God and ourselves in the stories told. The stories are recorded as examples for us to learn from (see 1 Corinthians 10:1-13). Will we learn from the mistakes and triumphs of those who have gone before, or will we repeat them?

So, as the Holy Spirit says: “Today, if you hear his voice, do not harden your hearts as you did in the rebellion, during the time of testing in the wilderness, where your ancestors tested and tried me, though for forty years they saw what I did. That is why I was angry with that generation; I said, ‘Their hearts are always going  astray, and they have not known my ways.’ So I declared on oath in my anger, ‘They shall never enter my rest.’” Hebrews 3:7-11

The boundaries allotted to the Israelites were still in good places, but not all who could have enjoyed them did. Some had to fall in the wilderness for their rebellion and disobedience.

The question remains for us today. Will we hear His voice and obey?

Prayer: God, thank You for Your faithfulness and generosity. Thank You that You have promised something good for those who love You. Help me today to listen for Your voice and to respond with love and obedience.

Reflection: Is God calling to you? How are you responding?
