Bible Passage: “But you know his proven character, because he has served with me in the gospel ministry like a son with a father.” (Philippians 2:22)
Scripture Reading: Philippians 2:19-30
A young man named Paul showed up at college. He was self-centered, didn’t know the Bible, and felt cocky.
Tim, who was taking a year of Bible training, began to meet with him.
Every Friday morning, they’d meet in a dorm room at 6:30. At first, Tim would teach Paul the things he was learning from the Bible on subjects like humility, pride, and purity. Later, Paul would teach, and Tim would evaluate.
Eventually, the meetings turned personal. Was Paul reading the Bible? How was he spending his time and his money? They also held each other accountable in key areas of their life.
The meetings only lasted seven months, but Paul says that those meetings changed him. “I often wonder where my life would have gone if the Lord had not injected Tim into it.”
What Tim did with Paul, Paul began to do with others. “Since 1985, there has really never been a time in my life when I was not meeting with other men, seeking to urge them on in their walk with Jesus,” says Paul. “To my great joy, many of these men have gone on to become far better Christians than me.”
It’s not fancy. It involves just a few things: two men, a Bible, and a willingness to learn together. It requires a small investment of time, and for you to care.
But the payoff is eternal. “Spending time with a brother to entrust the Gospel to him is never a waste of time,” Paul says.
Devote your life to discipling other guys. You’re more ready than you think. With God’s help, it can be one of the most significant things you do with your life.
Prayer: Thank You that You use people like Tim, Paul, and me to disciple others. Amen.
Reflection: What’s the next step you can take in becoming a “Tim” to others?
