The Power of Praying

In Daily Devotional by Darryl Dash

Bible Verse: “I give thanks to my God for every remembrance of you…” (Philippians 1:3 CSB)

Scripture Reading: Philippians 1:3-11

One of the most powerful things we can do is to pray for the men we disciple.

Pray for them when you meet with them. Pray with them when you’re alone. Whatever you do, pray.

Prayer is a reminder to us that we don’t hold the power to change their lives; God does. And God has promised to complete that work (Philippians 1:6).

Prayer also encourages the guys we’re discipling. You’ve probably experienced this: when you hear others pray for you, you realize that you’re supported and loved by others as well as the God of the universe.

The Apostle Paul, one of the greatest disciple-makers in history, modeled this for us. His letters to churches are full of prayers for others. We can learn from his example and pray.

  • Give thanks for them. “I always thank my God for you because of the grace of God given to you in Christ Jesus” (1 Corinthians 1:4). Pay attention to the ways you see God at work in them, and thank God for that, even if they still have a long way to go.
  • Pray that they comprehend the Gospel. “I pray that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened so that you may know what is the hope of his calling, what is the wealth of his glorious inheritance in the saints…” (Ephesians 1:18). If we understood a fraction of the blessings that are ours in Jesus, we would change.
  • Pray for their spiritual growth. In 2 Corinthians 13:7-9, Paul prays that believers would “do nothing wrong” and “become fully mature.” Paul prays more about their growth than their circumstances.

Whatever you do, pray for those you disciple!

Prayer: Lord, help me to pray for the spiritual growth of others. Amen.

Reflection: Is there anyone you can pray for right now?
