Christ’s Forgiveness When We Fail

In Daily Devotional by Tim Bergmann

Theme of the Week: Everything We Need for a Godly Life

Bible Verse: In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, in accordance with the riches of God’s grace that he lavished on us. Ephesians 1:7-8

The reality of the Christian walk is that we are going to fall short of hitting the mark. We want to live godly lives, but we find ourselves failing again and again. I am so grateful for the forgiveness that Christ offers.

It’s like when you build a budget. Once you’ve identified all your needs and wants, you add in a contingency amount for unforeseen costs. Christ has added in a massive contingency budget of forgiveness for us. It is more than enough for what we will need. Our role is to access that budget of grace.

Have you ever stayed in a hotel room that has a door to an adjoining room? You may open the door on your side, but you can’t have access to that other room unless that occupant opens the door on their side. This is a bit like how Christ’s forgiveness works.

In the one room stands all the forgiveness we could ever need; the room is brimming with it, Christ made it all available through the cross. On the other side, we find ourselves us and our sin. We need that forgiveness.

To access it, we have to open our door. We do that by humbly confessing our sins, by agreeing with Jesus that we were in the wrong. The more we do that, the more we open the door on our side.

But what about His side? Will He open the door to us after our despicable failures? My brothers, He will not only open that door, but He has also popped the hinges, pulled the door off, and thrown it off his balcony into the pool! His forgiveness is always available to us. His sacrifice was great enough for us. His love was deep enough for us.

Confess your sins to Christ and receive His extravagant forgiveness.
