Confused About Heaven

In Daily Devotional by Darryl Dash

Bible Verse: “He then carried me away in the Spirit to a great, high mountain and showed me the holy city, Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, arrayed with God’s glory. Her radiance was like a precious jewel, like a jasper stone, clear as crystal. (Revelation 21:10–11)

Scripture Reading: Revelation 21:10-27

My assignment was simple: speak to a primary school class about Heaven.

My problem? I wasn’t that clear on what Heaven would be like.

I told them everything I knew, which wasn’t much, and then they started asking questions.

I choked.

Kids ask the most insightful questions, and I didn’t have the answers. I walked away thinking that I had to learn a lot more about Heaven.

Most of us don’t have a clue what Heaven will be like. We read of rare jewels, or gates made from single pearls, or the streets of gold (Revelation 21:21).

It sounds nice, but boring too. Gold’s not really my colour, and pearls are my wife’s thing, not mine.

I’d much rather watch a Formula 1 race than float on clouds wearing white robes while holding a harp.

The reason we’re so bored of Heaven is because we’re fuzzy on what it will be like. God has revealed what we can expect, and the more we know the facts, the more we’ll look forward to what’s still to come.

Prayer: Lord, forgive me for being so unclear about what Heaven will be like. Please help me understand and anticipate what waits for me. Amen.

Reflection: How would you explain Heaven to a child?
