It Doesn’t Get Better Than This?

In Daily Devotional by Darryl Dash

Bible Verse: “Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth; for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and the sea was no more.” (Revelation 21:1)

Scripture Reading: Revelation 21:1-4

It was the perfect April evening.

It felt like July. A warm breeze filled the air. The roof of the Rogers Centre was open. And I was enjoying a Blue Jays game. I even think they won.

Even though I sat in the cheap seats, I thought to myself, “It doesn’t get any better than this.”

We’ve all had those unexpected moments of joy: the perfect vacation, the free surprise upgrade at the car rental place, the unexpectedly delicious meal. I have so many moments like this: my first kiss with Char, the moment she accepted my proposal, the first time I held my daughter in my arms. Some of them are simple, like a fun evening with friends, the kind you just don’t want to end.

According to Randy Alcorn, these moments on earth are previews of Heaven: “What we love about this life are the things that resonate with the life we were made for. The things we love are not merely the best this life has to offer — they are previews of the greater life to come.”[1]

This week, we’re going to look at what we can expect from Heaven.

Prayer: Lord, thank You for the simple joys in this life that point us to heaven. Amen.

Reflection: What joys do you experience in this life that point you to heaven?
