Bible Passage: “But godliness with contentment is great gain.” (1 Timothy 6:6 NIV)
Scripture Reading: 1 Timothy 6:6-11
When I was thirteen or fourteen, I wanted a Winchester Lever Action .22 rifle.
I wanted it bad. My dad didn’t think it was such a great idea, but I was determined. I thought about that rifle all the time. My life was incomplete without it. I needed it. How could I possibly be content without it?
I saved up and ordered it. When it finally came, I couldn’t have been happier! I was finally going to get the thing that would make my life complete!
I brought the gun home, barely containing my excitement. But when I went to load it, something was wrong with the mechanism. It was jammed. Nothing we did made any difference. I took it back to the store, and the salesman shrugged and said, “Well, looks like this one is a dud.”
In that moment, it seemed to me that with my dad’s discouragement and with the gun not working, it was God’s way of saying that maybe that gun wasn’t for me. I ended up getting my money back, and I never tried to purchase it again.
And guess what? My life went on. It turned out, I didn’t need that rifle to find fulfillment in my life; I could be content without it.
It is easy to think that if we get that rifle (or whatever you desire), we will finally be content.
But what if men could be content without getting what they always want? Man, that would be a superpower.
It’s not ungodly for guys to yearn for things, but if getting those things becomes the only way we can be happy, we are in trouble.
As the apostle Paul said, “Godliness with contentment is great gain” (1 Timothy 6:6 NIV).
This week, brothers, we will look at how men can be content, no matter what comes our way.
Prayer: Dear Lord, I know I will be disappointed sometimes in this life. I will want things that I will just not be able to get. Help me to be content in every situation. Teach me how to do that so that I might glorify You more with my life. Amen.
Reflection: What are you longing for these days? More money? More possessions? More sex? A better position or job? A sense that you are finally accomplishing something? Give all those things to the Lord and allow Him to fill you with His contentment.
