Theme of the Week: Faith and Work
Bible Verse: “God blessed them, and God said to them, ‘Be fruitful, multiply, fill the earth, and subdue it. Rule the fish of the sea, the birds of the sky, and every creature that crawls on the earth.’” Genesis 1:28
Scripture Reading: Genesis 1:26-31
I used to think that only some work mattered to God before understanding that all of our work matters. I think I used to also see work as a necessary evil, rather than seeing it as part of God’s design for us. God created us to work.
In Genesis 1 and 2, we learn that God created us for both work and worship. Most of the week, we work. We bring order to the world. We take the raw materials that God has given us and make something of them. In short, we work on God’s behalf to cultivate the earth and rule it on His behalf.
And then one day a week, God designed us to rest.
In other words, our work isn’t a distraction from our purpose. God put us here to work. Genesis teaches us that our vocations are, in different ways, helping to fulfill the purpose for which God made us. Preparing financial statements, building a house, farming, and marketing are all ways of carrying out the mandate that God gave us at the beginning of humanity. Through our work, we are helping to extend beauty and order in the world, and to help make it a fruitful place. Through our work, we get to cultivate and serve.
God created us to work. Are you working for your creator?
