Don’t Try This Alone

In Daily Devotional by Darryl Dash

Bible Passage: “And let us consider one another in order to provoke love and good works, not neglecting to gather together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging each other, and all the more as you see the day approaching.” (Hebrews 10:24-25 CSB)

Scripture Reading: Hebrews 10:19-25

If I could change one thing about the English language, it would be to distinguish between “you” (plural) and “you” (singular).

That’s one reason I appreciate the Southern “y’all.” It immediately signals the speaker is addressing a group, not just one person.

This linguistic quirk matters more than we realize, especially when reading the New Testament. So many of the instructions we encounter were written to communities, not individuals. Yet we instinctively read them as personal directives.

The result?

We approach the Christian life as a solo endeavour when God designed it as a team effort.

Here’s a truth we often overlook in our pursuit of godly character:

You can’t do this alone.

In fact, if you try, you’ll fail every time.

God never intended spiritual growth to be an individual achievement. It’s a community project, one that requires the encouragement, accountability, and shared wisdom of fellow believers walking alongside us.

According to Hebrews, we should carefully think about how we can stimulate others to good works (Hebrews 10:24). Left to ourselves, a man’s commitment to God will begin to taper off. We need each other.

One author compares the Church to a campfire. Consider what happens to a single log burning alone. Eventually, the flame flickers and dies. But when that same log is placed alongside others, the fire blazes with renewed strength and warmth.

The same principle holds true in the Body of Christ. The spiritual fire within a man burns brightest not in isolation, but when we gather, encouraging one another and actively living out our faith in community. It’s in these shared rhythms of fellowship that the flame of our collective devotion truly roars to life.

The Christian life was never meant to be lived alone. If you want to grow in godly character, commit yourself to meaningful relationships with other Christian men.

Seek out brothers in Christ who will spur you toward love and good works, even as you do the same for them. We need each other!

Prayer: Lord, help me to encourage my brothers and be encouraged by them as we follow Christ together. Amen.

Reflection: Who is someone you can provoke to love and good works today?
