Bible Passage: “When all the elders of Israel had come to King David at Hebron, he made a covenant with them at Hebron before the Lord, and they anointed David king over Israel, as the Lord had promised through Samuel.” (1 Chronicles 11:3)
Scripture Reading: 1 Chronicles 10:1-11:47
Have you ever had a moment when you think to yourself, “I should have learned that by now?!”
Or maybe, like me, you’ve had several of those moments. The popular admission of “I was ‘today years old’ when I learned…”
Those moments seem to circle around God for me. In particular, the way He works, especially around His calendar. Which very seldomly lines up with mine.
God works in His own particular timing.
David must have thought that on more than one occasion. He had known for a very long time that he was God’s chosen ruler of Israel. Anointed by the prophet Samuel, heralded by the people. A hero in battle.
Yet he remained in Saul’s service and shadow. He did not take opportunities to remove Saul from power, despite a reasonable argument that he could and should.
Yet the Chronicler essentially begins the story of the monarchy with David. Saul is given very little attention, despite much of Samuel and Kings being dedicated to his rise and reign (tumultuous and disappointing though it was).
It is tempting to think that’s the way it should have been. That David’s anointing was followed immediately by his coronation and celebration by the people. Just what Chronicles does: David was God’s chosen leader for the people. He was what God wanted, and yet he had to wait. And that was part of God’s plan.
God’s timing seldom matches ours. I’m “today years old,” and I’m still learning that. It doesn’t change God’s plans or His faithfulness. Waiting on God is one of the hardest things we do.
Whether waiting for something for themselves or someone they love, men often find themselves waiting on God’s timing. In that waiting, we must, like David, remain faithful to the God who is faithful to us.
Prayer: Father in Heaven, I confess that I suffer from wanting things now and that waiting is not always easy. Help me to wait patiently and faithfully for You and Your plans. Amen.
Reflection: Where do you need to trust God’s timing? How can you wait faithfully?
