Fight

In Daily Devotional by Bayne Leong

Theme of the Week: Zombieland

Bible Verse: “And I looked and arose and said to the nobles and to the officials and to the rest of the people, “Do not be afraid of them. Remember the Lord, who is great and awesome, and fight for your brothers, your sons, your daughters, your wives, and your homes.” Nehemiah 4:14, ESV

Scripture Reading: Nehemiah 4:6-15

Some of you may know that in my younger days, I dealt with depression, and I tried taking my own life. Things seemed hopeless, and there seemed to be no point in living. In the lead-up to my suicide attempts, I’m sure observers could’ve described me as a zombie. My eyes were lifeless and my walk aimless.

You may not necessarily want to take your own life, but maybe life has you down? You know the Lord, but it doesn’t seem like it’s enough. Perhaps the pandemic has taken its toll on you financially or otherwise. Maybe your marriage is in tatters or your children are estranged from you. It could be that a personal addiction has you beat and you’ve given up.

If that’s not enough, it’s possible that you’re tired of living in a dark world. Brokenness is everywhere, from political strife to human exploitation to unchecked violence.

But I say to you: fight for yourself. Fight with the strength God gives you. Fight for the life God has given you in Christ. Don’t accept the brokenness. Don’t accept the lie, “It’s just how it is.”

When the people of Jerusalem were still rebuilding its walls in Nehemiah’s day, they began to falter because of news the surrounding peoples wanted to attack them. Besides stationing guards at strategic points along the wall, Nehemiah roused his countrymen with, “Don’t be afraid of them. Remember the Lord, who is great and awesome, and fight for your brothers, your sons and your daughters, your wives and your homes” (Nehemiah 4:14). This is one of the most stimulating verses in the Bible.

Don’t give up. Shake off your zombie self. Don’t let the fire in you die out. Fight for your life, and in doing so, you’ll be fighting for your marriage, your family, your church, your city, and your world. The Lord is with you. Fight the good fight.
