Finding Life in Life

In Daily Devotional by Bayne Leong

Theme of the Week: Zombieland

Bible Verse: “What is man that you are mindful of him, and the son of man that you care for him? Yet you have made him a little lower than the heavenly beings and crowned him with glory and honor.” Psalm 8:4-5, ESV

Scripture Reading: Psalm 8:1-9

Continuing with the theme of zombies – we can be like these fictional creatures when we go through the motions every day, merely satisfying our base desires without any purpose.

We humans can act very much like animals on a typical day: relieving ourselves, foraging for food, surviving the day, enjoying our family, and then going to sleep. But we’re much more than animals, aren’t we?

Is it because we wear clothes? Or possess higher thinking? Wait – it’s because we pay taxes. It’s all of these and more, isn’t it? It’s the fact that we’re made in God’s image, which truly separates us from the animals.

Psalm 8 tells us that humans were created a little lower than the angels but above all the animals. This psalm echoes the cries of our hearts when we gaze into the expanse of a starry night and contemplate why the Almighty would deign to cherish us puny humans.

The answer lies in God’s sovereign will – he chose to make us his image-bearers and bestow us authority to oversee the earth.

Though God calls us continually to the type of fellowship Adam and Eve had with him before the Fall, his overtures are often left unrequited by us. We have to tackle the rush-hour commute – who has time for God? There are bosses and customers to please. You have to referee fights at home. You’re worried about your stocks, and your game is about to come on. And don’t get me started on the pandemic. God? Yes, right, God – I’ll slip in a quick prayer and call it a day.

God gave us Jesus Christ to bring us back to him. He wants us to live the full life in Christ and change the world, not just merely exist. The full life happens when we remember God and our rightful place in his design. “O Lord, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth!” (Psalm 8:1).
