Finding Light in the Prison Cell

In Daily Devotional by Lewis Lau

Bible Passage: “Not that I am speaking of being in need, for I have learned in whatever situation I am to be content. I know how to be brought low, and I know how to abound. In any and every circumstance, I have learned the secret of facing plenty and hunger, abundance and need. I can do all things through him who strengthens me.” (Philippians 4:11-13 ESV)

Scripture Reading: Hebrews 4:12

If you’re reading this, I trust that you, or someone you’re close to, has been struggling.*

You don’t know why you’re feeling the way you do, but you haven’t given up.

You believe that the Word of God, which is living and active, sharper than any double-edged sword (Hebrews 4:12), can cut through the darkness and set you free from the prison you find yourself in.

You’ve come to the right place, my friend.

I honour your faith, and I believe that Jesus— the Word of God (John 1:1)—has healing and freedom from depression for you.

Whether you have an official diagnosis for depression or not, it’s important for us to clarify what we’re talking about when we use this word.

Clinically, major depressive disorder (MDD) describes a condition characterized by two core symptoms, among others: depressed mood (e.g., sadness, emptiness, hopelessness) and loss of interest or pleasure (a symptom we call anhedonia).

Depression can sometimes feel like you’re pushing a giant boulder of sadness and emptiness up a hill.

As men, this can feel impossible to understand and talk about.

Yet, I have good news for you. As Paul states in today’s passage, you can do all things through Him who strengthens you.

All things—including finding light within this darkness.

I get a sense, though, that you already knew that. Philippians 4:13 is a verse that most of us are familiar with.

What we sometimes miss, though, are the verses that precede it.

When we consider Philippians 4:13 in context, we start to see that Paul isn’t just speaking in generalities about Christian triumph.

He’s telling us that the One who strengthens him has taught him how to find satisfaction in every possible situation.

He has learned the secret to finding life in every circumstance, including in the depths of need, hunger, sadness, and pain.

That’s good news, because it means we can learn the same secrets Paul did.

You too can learn to find contentment in the midst of what’s happening within you and around you, and the Word of God will be your teacher.

This week, we’re going to use the Book of Philippians to identify the keys to Paul’s thinking that enabled him to find light within the darkness of the prison cell in which he wrote this letter.

I pray that this week will bring you some light amidst the darkness.

Prayer: Lord Jesus, as we take this week to dive into the Book of Philippians, I pray that Your Holy Spirit would illuminate Your Word to us. Reveal to us the things that Paul learned in the darkness of his prison cell that could also help us find light amidst our darkness. Show us that we are not alone in what we’re going through—that You are with us in it and that You know how to bring us back into the light. Speak to us and give us Your wisdom. Amen.

Reflection: Do you believe that the Word of God has the power to cut through the darkness and bring light into your feelings of depression? What do you need to do to prepare your heart to receive the Word of God this week?
