Theme of the Week: Who You Are – Characteristics of our Identity in Christ

Bible Verse: Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in the heavenly realms with every spiritual blessing in Christ. Ephesians 1:3

Scripture Reading: Ephesians 1:3-10

There’s probably a sizeable list of nouns and accomplishments that can be used to describe who each of us is. Everything from job to relationships to accomplishments to genealogy and nationality. Each having its own appropriate place depending on where and under what circumstances we are introducing ourselves.

If we decided that adjectives were in play, the list would grow significantly, especially if we were honest enough to include the negative ones along with the positive. And if we invited others to describe us? Well, perhaps let’s not dwell on what might or might not make that list.

We all have various ways of understanding ourselves and that impacts how we live our lives. In various situations, each of the traits that identifies us is more (or less) expressed as is appropriate to the moment. Few things identify us all the time.

But some things do. How God sees us and what He says about us is true no matter what our other traits or jobs or circumstances, and God says some amazing things.

It’s our job to know what He says, to accept it, and live the reality of our identity in Him. In the coming days we’ll explore just a few of the ways God sees us and what that means for how we understand ourselves.

Prayer: God, there are so many things that are trying to define me. I confess that sometimes I pursue some ideas about myself that are bound up in pride and insecurity. Help me to see myself as you see me and to accept what you say about me as my truest identity.

Reflect: How would you describe yourself? Take some time to think through what you identify as your most important characteristics.
