Theme of the Week: The Key to Flourishing
Bible Verse: “Look!” Nebuchadnezzar shouted. “I see four men, unbound, walking around in the fire unharmed! And the fourth looks like a god!” Daniel 3:25
Scripture Reading: Daniel 3:1-30
Hockey has the seventh man. Baseball has the tenth man. Football and soccer have the twelfth man. Sports fans know this concept refers to supporters who stand with their team and sometimes help motivate them to victory.
The incredible stories continue in Chapter 3 with the famous account of Daniel’s three friends who faced another life-threatening moment. King Nebuchadnezzar had a huge idol created representing himself and his imperial power. He ordered all people to pay homage to the statue or face certain death.
The three Hebrew young men, Shadrach, Meschach, and Abednego, were targeted, accused of insubordination, but stood firm in their beliefs and refused to obey the decrees. Their faith held fast to their God, and worship was reserved for him alone. They were sentenced to die by fire and thrown into a furnace so hot that the soldiers perished as they performed their grim duty. But miraculously, God delivered the Hebrew friends from death, and a fourth man appeared with them who, by the king’s own words, looked “like a God.” A special appearance that day not only saved them but pointed all, including the king, to acknowledge this God as the true God.
When the heat of adversity is turned up in our lives, this testimonial demonstrates that we can still flourish. But how can we stand true to our convictions and faith when the heat is on? We need to know that when we stand up, God steps in. We are not alone. We can thrive because there is “another in the fire” with us, and he will help us flourish under fire. Listen and live by these words:
There’s a grace when the heart is under fire
Another way when the walls are closing in
And when I look at the space between
Where I used to be and this reckoning
I know I will never be alone
There was another in the fire standing next to me
There was another in the waters holding back the seas
And should I ever need reminding of how I’ve been set free
There is a cross that bears the burden where another died for me
There is another in the fire.1
