Theme of the Week: Four Essential Loves

Bible Verse: “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.” Mark 12:30

Scripture Reading: Joshua 1:8, Ephesians 5:25-28, Matthew 22:36-40

What does it mean to love God this much?? With all my heart, with all my soul, with all my mind and all my strength? It means more than simply going to church on Sunday. As mere humans, we can’t fathom how much God loved us that He would send His own son to die for us. That’s love at a level that we can’t comprehend. What we can comprehend are 4 ways that we can love God with all of our beings. All this week we’ll explore 4 essential loves and how we can love God with all of our beings.

The first is loving His word. The Bible tells us to meditate on the word day and night. It’s impossible to know God without knowing His word. One of the key ways to grow in our walk with Jesus and to grow our faith is to spend time in His word, meditating on it, memorizing it, and doing it.

God has called us to love His church. As men, we’re told to “love our wives as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her” (Ephesians 5:25). We are to love our wives that much and we’re to love the church just as Christ loved the church and died for it. We’re called to be part of a local church and be actively involved in the church’s mission. Loving God means loving His church.

The Great commandment says “you should love your neighbor a yourself” (Matthew 22:39). In the parable of the lost sheep, Jesus left the 99 sheep to find the one that was lost. Loving God means loving our neighbor, especially the lost just as He loved us when we were once lost.

Knowing who we are in Christ helps us to love ourselves and know that we are God’s masterpiece. We are created in God’s image and our bodies are a temple of the Holy Spirit. We are fearfully and wonderfully made by the creator of the universe and when we understand the depth of God’s love for us will only help us love him more.
