Bible Passage: “God has given each of you a gift. Use it to help each other. This will show God’s loving-favor.” (1 Peter 4:10 NLT)
Scripture Reading: Ephesians 4:1-16
Man, I loved the 2025–26 NFL season!
I mean, it didn’t hurt that I have been a Seahawks fan for the last fifteen years. I know most of you aren’t going to see it that way. My buddy, a fellow Seahawks fan, said, “If you want a Super Bowl that is going to bore 90% of America, just call the Seahawks!”
So, maybe this year’s Super Bowl wasn’t an edge-of-the-seat affair, but there were some spectacular games last season.
Many outstanding athletes were playing the game as well. It is almost unbelievable to see what some of those guys can do.
Fran Tarkenton, a Hall of Fame quarterback back in the ‘60s and ‘70s, had a few things to say in October last year about who was going to succeed as the season wore on.
“We’re about halfway through the NFL season, and this is where things get real. By now, every team has shown who they are. The great ones don’t just rely on talent; they rely on each other.
“Because teams win. Individuals don’t. You can have the best quarterback, the fastest receiver, or the toughest lineman, but if they’re not working together, they’re not going anywhere.”
If you are a son of God, you have been both naturally and supernaturally gifted. Maybe you are a strong leader. Maybe you are a prayer warrior. Maybe you are a sacrificial giver. Maybe you are a great communicator. Maybe you are a fantastic musician.
I have been gifted by God, too, and I love the gifts that He has entrusted to me. But we always need to be very clear that while God’s gifts bring us great personal happiness, the purpose of those gifts is to serve.
If our focus is primarily on using the gifts for our own betterment, we have missed the point.
We are to use whatever gift we have to serve the Body of Christ.
Prayer: Lord Jesus, thank You for the gifts You have given me. Everything I have comes from You. At times, I forget and think that I am who I am because of something I did, and that the gifts I have are primarily for my personal advancement. Forgive me, Jesus, for that selfish attitude. Help me find ways my gifts can serve Your Body. Amen.
Reflection: Have you written down an inventory of the gifts that God has given you? Take some time to do that and then, after thanking Jesus for His generosity toward you, ask Him what the best investment of those gifts for His glory might be!
