Going Farther Together

Theme of the Week: Godly Men Are Team Players

Bible Verse: Two are better than one, because they have a good return for their labor. Ecclesiastes 4:9 NIV

Scripture Reading: Ecclesiastes 4:9, 1 Corinthians 15:33

Recently, I decided to put up a fence around my back yard. I made a plan, priced out all the materials and intended to get to work. As far as I was concerned, I had thought of everything. My wife, on the other hand, thought that I would be more successful if I included a few other men in my strategy.

I was hesitant. Surely, I could take care of the job by myself; I watched enough YouTube videos to convince me of that. In one of my wiser moments, however, I conceded to ask for help. That was a great decision.

A few guys showed up and we went to work on the fence. Not only did it get put up in good time, but there were several sets of eyes on the quality of the work and several ideas on how we could do it better.

The guys had different resources and skills than I and not only that, we had the privilege of sharing time together. We worked, we talked, we laughed, we ate, and at the end of it all there was a great fence on my property.

Needless to say, we had good return for our work.

In the book of Ecclesiastes, Solomon encourages us to be in community. He simply states that two are better than one. (Ecclesiastes 4:9)

Community is greater than the sum of its parts. When people combine their gifts and abilities it produces much more than their individual efforts added together.

That is why God created us for community. We need to rely on each other and work together. Jesus modelled this by surrounding Himself with disciples and when He promised that He would never leave us. He knows that men need other men, whether it’s to build a fence or to build our lives.

That is why God created us for community. We need to rely on each other and work together.

As one proverb attributed to African origin states: “If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together.”

Let’s go further together, and then buy a bunch of delicious pizzas to share and celebrate the results.
