Don’t Do It Alone

Theme of the Week: Godly Men Are Team Players

Bible Verse: Therefore encourage one another and build each other up, just as in fact you are doing. 1 Thessalonians 5:11 ESV

Scripture Reading: 1 Thessalonians 5:1-11

This whole month we have been looking at the marks of a good man.

We will conclude September by describing a good man as one who is a team player.

I decided when I was around 18 years old, that I wasn’t going to attempt to do it alone. I wanted to have trusted friends that I could be totally honest with.

See, I had some secrets in my life that were eating away at me, as well as some dark habits that were going to set me up for devastating failure. I knew that if I left them alone, they would grow like mold in a dark corner. It may seem that:

  • It’s easier to live with secrets
  • It’s safest to live in isolation
  • We appear strongest when we are the lone wolf or the alpha male

But nothing could be farther from the truth.

I realized that as I became more vulnerable and transparent with a few trusted men that I began to experience real freedom and success in my life.
It made me…

  • a stronger person
  • a better spouse
  • a more honest dad
  • a truer friend

God created us for community and there are plenty of scriptures that back that up. Maybe the strongest argument for community comes from looking at the life of our Master and Leader, Jesus Christ. He surrounded Himself with twelve disciples and out those twelve, were three who He was especially close to – Peter, James, and John.

If Jesus needed such deep camaraderie and community, it’s a safe bet that we do to.

If Jesus needed such deep camaraderie and community, it’s a safe bet that we do to.

This week, I want to highlight at least five benefits of being in community with a few trusted friends.

I would not be where I am today in my marriage and work without the small team of brothers that I have. Those guys know who they are and I am grateful for them. My prayer is that I can be the kind of brother that they can trust and rely on too.

May the Lord Jesus have His way in us as we humble ourselves and open ourselves up to real community.
