Jesus Christ: Master Angler

In Daily Devotional by Brad Klassen

Bible Passage: “(Jesus) said to Simon, ‘Put out into deep water, and let down the nets for a catch.’” (Luke 5:4 NIV)

Scripture Reading: John 21:1-14

Have you ever been on a fishing excursion?

My neighbor went on one and came back with amazing stories of his time. But what made it so fun was that there were guides who knew exactly where to go.

When you’re fishing on a lake you don’t know well, it’s best to take someone with you who does, or maybe you can ask the local old-timers in the coffee shop to see what they suggest and increase your chances of success.

Sharing Jesus with others is no different.

In John chapter 21, the disciples had been fishing all night long and caught nothing when they heard a voice from the shore telling them to cast their net “on the right side of the boat” (John 21:6 NIV).

Jesus could see what the disciples couldn’t. But that instruction also came with a promise.

“(Jesus) said, “Throw your net on the right side of the boat and you will find some (fish).” (John 21:6 NIV, emphasis added).

Not only could Jesus see what they couldn’t and promise to supply what they were looking for, but He also ensured they got more than they thought possible.

“When they did, they were unable to haul the net in because of the large number of fish” (John 21:6 NIV, emphasis added).

Wherever God has you, He has you there for a reason—He sees “fish” (people) who need Him, and He wants you to help them find Him.

So, pray and ask Him where He wants you to be. Ask Him how to approach someone. Ask Him to give you greater capacity to listen to others. Ask Him to open up opportunities to share your faith.

Ask Him to teach you how to fish.

Then be ready to cast your net to the right side of your boat, pull in the haul He sees there, and be the “fisher of people” that He is asking you to be.

Prayer: Jesus, thank You that You see things I cannot. Help me be a man who trusts You when You ask me to follow You in faith. Amen.

Reflection: Ask Jesus for an opportunity to share Him with someone. Then be ready to cast your line and be a fisher of people!
