Theme of the Week: How The Impossible Happened
Bible Verse: “For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” Jeremiah 29:11, NIV
Scripture Reading: Jeremiah 29:20-23
This Christmas season, I want to remind you that God not only has big plans, but he also has a big gift for you: a guaranteed future. This may undoubtedly be one of the greatest gifts you will ever be offered.
It is humanly impossible for anyone to guarantee the future: we can try to guess, we can hope, we can work toward a desired future with our fingers crossed, but we humans can never guarantee the future. It is impossible.
But not to God. He can, and he does it through the miracle of Christ’s birth! You don’t have to believe me – take it from his own words:
“For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” (Jeremiah 29:11, NIV)
You may be asking what this verse has to do with Christmas, let alone with Jesus. A lot – considering that God spoke these words to a people in captivity desperately hoping to one day be delivered from their bondage. Jeremiah foresaw that his people would be deported to Babylon for 70 years. But, he also saw that one day the Messiah would come to put an end to all the injustices that plague humanity. God’s idea of a big plan is abundant life and righteousness for all who believe in his Son.
The closer history got to Jesus’ birth, the closer we got to entering God’s promise of true hope and guaranteed future. Jesus living among us, fully God and fully man, was considered impossible and yet it happened. So as you celebrate this season with a grateful heart, proclaim the promises of prosperity, hope and blessed future that were made possible and available to you and yours through Christ.
